The Flying Fish Company gets crab direct from fishermen in Garibaldi and frankly it's cheaper and just as tasty (if not better) than anything else you can get on the coast or here in Portland. The crabs were delivered Friday, and I bought a nice fat one on my way back from the farmer's market this morning. I whisked together three tablespoons of vegan mayonnaise with the juice and zest of a Meyer lemon (from the big bag Helen brought back with her from her family visit to California over the holidays) and six or seven garlic cloves roasted until soft and sweet but not caramelized in the toaster oven and mashed well, then folded in the crabmeat I'd picked out while listening to the news on the radio. I steamed two rosettes of tat soi (so happy the winter farmer's market has started!) and that was the green bed for the crab salad, indulgent and rich with little sparks of bitter contrast from the zest. The crab-shell broth is cooling on the counter now, and I will make a sea-briny risotto on Tuesday, I think, if there's a good firm whitefish at the fish store, or perhaps some mussels. Or maybe more crab, just to go all out on the luxury front. So nice that the ocean comes all the way in to SE Hawthorne now with this new fish store. Though I did recently watch a NOVA video about glacial ice melting and the coming rise in sea levels - perhaps I'll be able to catch my own Dungeness crabs off the back deck soon ...
