Ocean Sushi, Hilo

"Not much of an ambiance," it said in the guidebook, and they were right. The faded linoleum, mismatched plastic chairs, tilting tables, and calendar-picture pages thumbtacked haphazardly to the grimy-looking white walls make you think you're in a bus depot of a forgotten town, but when the bento boxes come out, this place can hold its own with any Portland-area buddha-and-bamboo-bedecked sushi spot - and at a significant cost savings. Of course, having the ocean a block or two away helps with the fresh fish side of things. But we looked around and it appeared that Ocean Sushi is where the locals go for Japanese food in Hilo, dining in or takeout. We had edamame and hot tea, then John got one of the bento boxes while Mom and I ate a Big Island roll (cucumber and ahi with a spicy mayonnaise) and a Sunset roll (avocado and hamachi with tobiko), a pickled plum roll and a spider roll. Definitely recommended if you're visiting Hilo.
